Harmony of Tone

Andre Kertesz’s photograph of a couple, with their backs to the camera, peering through a hole in a wooden fence, shows no evidence of the images title “Circus”. The image has been processed with a limited tonal range, almost camouflaging the couple as they sneak a peak through a crack in the fence. To have pushed the image to have strong darks and highlights would have destroyed the voyeuristic atmosphere he has created.
